About the Report
As part of its continued engagement with rural transformation, the Centre for Innovation and Social Enterprise (CISE) conducted a multi-day field study in Kanthari village, Firozabad, under the Model Gaon framework. The assessment, documented in the Gramdarpan report, combined household surveys, focus group discussions, and participatory workshops to capture both quantitative indicators and lived experiences.
The study revealed Kanthari’s notable progress in education, with literacy rates surpassing the district average and well-maintained primary infrastructure. Yet, the absence of a secondary school fuels a 25% dropout rate, especially among girls. In health, the presence of a Primary Healthcare Centre ensures basic services, but reliance on private care persists, and maternal health indicators require urgent attention.

Livelihoods in Kanthari rely on daily wage work and agriculture, with seasonal income instability. Some farmers practice horticulture and organic farming, and women’s self-help groups are active, but women’s financial independence and youth skill development remain limited. Water quality and sanitation are major concerns, including fluoride contamination and non-functional government toilets. The Gramdarpan report recommends improving infrastructure, healthcare, water treatment, and skill-based livelihoods to make Kanthari a model for sustainable village development.
