Water for Sustainable Future
About the Report
The Sirsa report evaluates the impact of ICICI Foundation’s Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) initiative in the Rania and Dabwali blocks of Sirsa, Haryana. The project focuses on addressing water scarcity by installing 25 RWH systems in government schools. Field visits and interactions with school authorities, students, and community members highlighted significant environmental, social, and economic benefits of the initiative.
Key outcomes include groundwater recharge of approximately 70,900 litres per unit annually, totaling nearly 1.8 crore litres reinfused over a decade. The initiative also demonstrates strong financial viability, with a Social Return on Investment (SROI) of ₹2.35 for every ₹1 spent. Importantly, the program has fostered a culture of water conservation, with students gaining awareness and sharing knowledge with their families, and school principals reporting smooth implementation.

The report identifies opportunities for further impact, including strengthening maintenance protocols, enhancing collaboration with local governance bodies, and empowering implementation partners. These measures aim to ensure long-term sustainability and scalability, positioning the ICICI Foundation’s RWH initiative as a replicable model for rural water management and sustainable development in water-stressed regions.
